Pegasus leads the way with OCE exam results

Pegasus boasts an impressive track record when it comes to providing qualifications for the next generation of mine supervisors.

Along with other specialist safety and mining courses, Pegasus conducts a regular intake of students looking to attain their Certificate IV in Surface Coal Mining, often referred to as the Open Cut Examiner (OCE) or Mine Supervisors course.

The course is widely considered as an important stepping stone in the career of aspiring mine managers and is made up of 14 units - nine core units and five elective.

The course is normally conducted over a 12 month period but Pegasus offers a shorter nine month course.

This course is a pre-requisite for two separate State Government written exams covering both the legal and statutory requirements and practical aspects of running an open cut mine site.

It also prepares participants for an oral examination in front of an experienced Mine Manager and a Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Inspector who are responsible for issuing the appropriate statutory certificate of competence.

The student must pass both written exams, with a combined aggregate score of 60% across the two, and receive a unanimous positive assessment from the members on the Board of Examiners who conduct the oral examination.

Pegasus frequently achieves pass rates well above the industry average.

In our first 2011 class to graduate, 17 of the 20 participants passed.

“The pass rate for these classes is high compared to the industry average pass rate which varies from 35 to 65 per cent,” explained course convenor, and Pegasus trainer, Robin Hopps.

“To have 85% of students who complete our Certificate IV training exceed the required standard for the written examination is very satisfying and it’s a testament to the skill and dedication of our Training Division that we consistently receive pass rates in excess of the industry average.”

Pegasus has developed a reputation as a training organisation that gets the very best from its students.

We promote a learning environment that encourages open and ongoing communication – we mentor our OCE students as much as we lecture them and this is clearly having the right effect.
